Globalization is a joke when it’s used to defend outsourcing. In the example of the telecommunications jobs that have been relocated to India, the idea of outsourcing can be easily misconstrued as a positive thing. The people are shown working happily and eager to neutralize their dialects to sound more like their American customers and then using their earned money to buy American brand names. If only things were so picture perfect.
The truth of the matter is that outsourcing is a way for companies to save money on American regulations on safety and human relations. Here’s a doozie of a question: do you think the people working at those jobs in India or those working businesses in other nations have the same benefits or pay regulations as we have in America? Do you think that big businesses are concerned about their impact on the community they’re moving into? The land is cheaper to buy overseas and who’s to say that the land they’re scooping up isn’t residential areas, forcing families to relocate. Factories that have been outsourced to Mexico dump waste into nearby rivers without any obstruction from the government due to lack of proper environmental protection laws.
Great, perfect. Sure, we’re giving people more lucrative jobs that may or may not treat them well (because, let’s face it, they moved their businesses elsewhere for some reason and profit drives all) but what about the people who lost their jobs in America? Pleasanton, a town northeast of the San Francisco Bay Area, was a town that flourished when a company boomed, sparking the local economy and making homes in the area a hot topic. Imagine that company just disappearing because it could make more money in Japan. Good for the company but a nice f*#k you to the people of Pleasanton. This isn’t a hypothetical either. It’s something that happens frequently in small towns of America and many of these towns are turned into ghost towns afterwards.
In conclusion I wanted to mention a little something that boiled me up a bit. We were discussing this idea in class and some asshole in the back piped up and defended the idea of outsourcing, saying that freeing those people from their jobs allows them to get a better job. He also said using a calculator “frees your mind to make decisions.” And maybe we should hire an illegal immigrant to shake our dicks for us too... lazy ass.

Nice joke!
Actually, (in reference to the penultimate sentence), I think he was being ironic when he made the calculator analogy (at least, I hope he was!!).
