I can't condone what I don't understand because that would be ignorant of me to do so. And I'm in no way saying that the Church takes part in idol worship. I DO understand the statues are meant to be a reminder. My point isn't to attack the Church but to criticize the "fanatics," as you put it, and not of just Catholocism either. I'm not singling out the Church out in this at all.

While I don't totally understand the Church's means, I don't condone them either. What I was aiming towards is the over glorification, where the statue itself becomes the object of worship, an idol.

Agreed. But that doesn't mean there isn't purpose to it.

yeah I'm an English major. the story behind that picture was that i'd just stepped out of the Pirates of the Carribian when I saw this guy and promptly asked for his boots. He carelessly bumped me out of his way with his shoulder, an action that many people saw and commented about and when I asked to at least take a picture with him he denied me. So I tossed my camera to my sister who snapped the picture and then I pants-ed that a*%hole and took off. Well, there was some camera malfunction and my sister paniced and ran too. That guy was so pissed off he immediately turned on the guy in the red shirt; I guess he didn't even notice me behind him.
